Odds & Betting Preview Of The ANA Inspiration 2020

September 7, 2020 by Ryan Knuppel

ANA_Inspiration, Dinah Shore TrophyWith the AIG Women’s Open in the rearview mirror, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) pivots to the second major of the season, the ANA Inspiration, which is slated to take place from Sept. 10-13. As one of the most prestigious ladies’ gold tournaments of the year, the ANA Inspiration has usually been held as the opening major on the calendar.

But due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the competitive scene, this year’s ANA Inspiration will be held as the second major of the season.

The ANA Inspiration is recognized as one of the oldest and most prominent golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour. This year will mark the 49th year of the tournament, the 38th time ANA inspiration will be hosted as a major championship and the 48th time as a part of the LPGA Tour.

The tournament will take place at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., which is home of three championship golf courses, the first of which – currently used for ANA Inspiration – was designed by Desmond Muirhead in 1971.

As it was the case with AIG Women’s Open, the upcoming Major championship will be played behind closed doors i.e., without any live audience, albeit with live coverage courtesy of Golf Channel who will televise the event for the 10th consecutive year. Even though there will be no spectators at the venue, the ANA Inspiration is an event no golf fan should miss as it will feature the strongest field ever since COVID-19 stopped play.

The Odds

The 2020 ANA Inspiration will highlight eight of the world’s top ten players, including four of the world’s top five. Furthermore, 17 players in the world’s top 25 and seven of the past champions will travel to Mission Hills Country Club to contest the title.

This week we will see world No. 4 Sung Hyun Park and world No. 5 Sei Young Kim make their 2020 debuts after deciding not to travel to the UK for the AIG Women’s Open. Meanwhile, the reigning ANA Inspiration champion, Jin Young Ko, opted not to travel to California this year.

Joining the stacked list of players, which includes 20 major champions with 24 major titles and 30 Solheim Cups, is also a handful of amateurs who will look to prove themselves against the world’s elite and make a name for themselves at the highest level of play.

With the toughest LPGA tournament of the year just around the corner, we have picked out three betting favorites as well as a dark horse pick, who, in our book, are the most likely to contest the trophy and the privilege to take a leap in the Poppies Pond.

The Favourites

Inbee Park

Inbee ParkThe seven-time major champion is entering ANA Inspiration as the odds-on favorite to repeat her success from 2013 and hoist the trophy. Seeing the 32-year-old Korean priced as the favorite ahead of the weekend tournament, however, is nothing shocking, considering her success at this course and the impressive form she has shown this year.

Looking back, Park managed a rather disappointing T68 finish at the 2019 ANA Inspiration, but that does not take away from her success from previous years. The Korean golf pro finished tied for second in 2018 after failing to deliver in the playoff, tied for third in 2017, and tied for sixth in 2016, effectively making her one of the most successful golfers at this course across the last couple of years.

It’s also worth noting that Park already won the Women’s Australian Open in February and has last weekend managed a fairly impressive fourth-place finish at Royal Troon Old Course behind Minjee Lee, Thidapa Suwannapura and Sophia Popov.

Odds to win: 11.00

Minjee Lee

Minjee LeeThe 24-year-old Australian golfer has been on many people’s radar following her third-place finish at the Women’s British Open, which is only an extension of her already impressive list of results this year.

In February, Lee locked in a sixth-place tie finish at the VIC Open. While she failed to show up at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club (T25), Lee went on to secure a third-place finish at Driver on Championship, fourth at Marathon Classic, a 16th-place tie at Ladies Scottish Open, and the aforementioned third-place finish last week.

Lee has yet to win the ANA Inspiration; however, we have to mention, Lee has a third-place tie finish from 2017. Since Lee is enjoying one of the best seasons of her career, it would be fair to expect her to put up a show this weekend. However, it remains to be seen whether she can go the distance and win her first major.

Odds to win: 12.00

Danielle Kang

Danielle Kang

The No. 2 in the world, Danielle Kang, is priced as one of the top-three favorites ahead of the second major of the season even though her display at the British Open was not exactly promising (T32). Nevertheless, Kang has a sixth-place tie finish at the ANA Inspiration last year and has produced quite an inspiring list of results in 2020.

Kang kicked off the year with a third-place finish at Gainbridge LPGA, won the Drive on Championship and Marathon Classic, as well as tying for fifth at the Ladies Scottish Open, so it’s easy to brush her 32nd-place tie at Women’s British Open off as an off-day for the 27-year-old golfer.

Odds to win: 12.00

Dark Horse: Rose Zhang

Rose ZhangWith many elite golfers not in the field – including the AIG Women’s Open champion Sophia Popov – the ANA Inspiration will be a perfect time to shine for some lesser-known and even amateur players. If there is one amateur golfer who could impress, it’s Rose Zhang.

Alongside Lei Ye, Kaitlyn Papp, Gabriela Ruffles and Emilia Migliaccio, the two-time Junior Solheim Cup (2017, 2019) and Junior Ryder Cup (2018) champion Zhang is one of the golfers we should keep our eyes on.

Especially after her impressive performance at the US Women’s Amateur Championship, which she won just over two weeks ago.

Zhang has already appeared at ANA Inspiration in 2018 when she finished tied for 60th, and now looks set to improve upon that performance and contest a top-20 finish.

Odds to win: 201.00

Our Prediction

Out of the three favorites, it’s Danielle Kang, who is in our book the safest pick. Even though her result at the British Open left a lot to be desired, Kang is still the highest-rated golfer in the field, since the reigning champion Ko Jin-young will not be traveling to the Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

The American golfer finished tied for sixth last year, which was by far her best placement at the ANA Inspiration in eight appearances. Considering she is in the best form of her career, Kang should be a real threat this weekend.

Rose Zhang is another pick we like ahead of the ANA Inspiration. Even though we don’t expect an amateur golfer to win, considering how stacked the field is, it’s not entirely unlikely she will manage a solid finish.

Zhang is enjoying a solid season, and since she is already familiar with the course, a top-20 finish is within the realm of possibility.
