The fourth race of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship is slated to take place this Sunday, August 2, at the famous Silverstone Circuit near the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone, England.
Also known as the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone has been the home of Formula races ever since it first hosted the British Grand Prix in 1948, but it was not until two years later (in 1950) when Silverstone held the first World Championship race.
Between 1955-1986, the race rotated between Silverstone, Aintree and Brands Hatch, but permanently settled at the Silverstone Circuit after the track modifications in 1987.
The COVID-19 pandemic has left its footprint in every sport and F1 is no exception. Not only was the 2020 Formula One World Championship season postponed until the start of July, but the schedule has also been introduced to some massive changes with many racetracks hosting double-header races.
Like the Red Bull Ring in Austria, the Silverstone Circuit is set to hold two F1 World Championship events this season, with races scheduled for August 2 and August 9. The first race is billed as the British Grand Prix, whereas the second race will be referred to as the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, to celebrate the 70 years since the inception of the Formula One World Championship in 1950.

The 2019 race at the Silverstone Circuit was held on Sunday, July 14, and it marked the 10th race of the 2019 Formula One World Championship. It was also the 74th running of the British Grand Prix and the 70th rime the race was run as a World Championship event.
The previous race at the Silverstone Circuit was won by the eventual champion Lewis Hamilton, who locked in his sixth win at the track and with that surpassed his compatriot Jim Clark and the legendary Alain Prost who both won the British Grand Prix five times. In the same race, Hamilton also put up the fastest lap time in the history of the race (1:27.369) and with that solidified himself as the most successful driver on the track.
But can Lewis Hamilton repeat his success and come away from the race with his seventh career-win at the Silverstone Circuit, or is there another driver we should keep an eye on?

Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton is (again) the odds on favorite to win the British Grand Prix and there are not a lot of arguments to be made against that. After finishing fourth in the opening race in Austria – due to a five-second penalty – Hamilton bounced back and won back-to-back races at the Styrian and the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The six-time Formula One world champion has won at the Silverstone Circuit in five out of the last six installments of the race and finished second in 2018. What’s more, in 13 starts at this track, Hamilton finished outside of the top 10 only once and outside of the top five only twice.
Hamilton’s record on his home track does the talking for him. He is without a doubt the man to beat, so the question ahead of the race is not so much whether Hamilton can do it, but rather who can stop him.
Odds to win: 1.44
Valtteri Bottas
The Silver Arrows must be ecstatic with the fact that the only man who is seemingly Hamiton’s main competitor this year is no other than his teammate Bottas. The 30-year-old Finn is entering the 2020 season following one of his career-best performances in 2019 when he finished second in the driver standings and while that was a somewhat bitter-sweet placement, it’s hard to be overly critical of his four wins on top of 10 podium finishes last season.
Bottas got off to a strong start of the 2020 season by winning in Austria, but had to settle for a runner-up finish in the second in the Styrian Grand Prix and third in Hungary. Nevertheless, his driving this season was nothing short but phenomenal.
Even though Bottas is now second in the drivers’ standings, he is not one to be ignored ahead of the British Grand Prix. The Finnish driver has accumulated five top-five finishes at Silverstone and has managed a runner-up finish in 2019, 2017 and 2014. His average finish sits at 5.9, only second to Hamilton (3.4) amongst the active drivers.
Odds to win: 3.50
Max Verstappen
Like Bottas, the “Mad Max” had one of his best seasons in 2019, when he claimed his career-best third-place finish in the Formula One World Championship and with that solidified himself as one the drivers that could potentially rival Mercedes’ dominance.
The 22-year-old prodigy, however, had a bit shaky start of this season, as he was forced to retire in the Austrian Grand Prix. Nevertheless, he bounced back with a third-place finish at the Styrian Grand Prix and a runner-up finish in Hungary.
At the Silverstone Circuit, Verstappen has three top-five finishes from his last four races (2019, 2017, 2016 and 2015). His average start (5.8) is also third-best out of all active drivers and is on top of that one of nine drivers who average a top-10 finish.

Dark Horse: Sergio Perez

Checo ended 10th in the 2019 Formula One World Championship, which was his worst season since 2014, however, it’s hard to ignore how solid Perez has looked in the opening three races of this season. He finished sixth in both of the opening Austrian races and locked in a seventh-place finish in Hungary.
In his nine career starts at the Silverstone, Perez produced five top-10 finishes, but never managed to finish amongst the top five and only produced a 17th-place finish in 2019. Having said that, Perez managed a sixth, ninth and 10th place finish in 2016-2018.
Even though Perez’s record in England is not exactly stellar, his strong start of the 2020 season suggests he is set to make some serious noise this weekend. He had strong performances in the opening three races and if he can continue driving at the same pace, we could potentially see Perez push for a top-six.
Odds to win: 26.00
Our Prediction
Given Hamilton’s dominance, it’s hard to doubt Brit’s chances to repeat his success from recent years and claim his seventh win on home soil. Based on what we have seen so far this season, Bottas and Verstappen are arguably the only two drivers who would potentially compete with Hamilton for the top spot, however, considering how much better Hamilton has looked in the recent two races and the fact that he is historically the best driver on Silverstone, it is very unlikely we are in for a shock win from one of the two.
Betting on Verstappen to finish on the podium is another solid bet to take since he is well above all other drivers besides Bottas and Hamilton, whereas trusting Perez to improve his 11.2 average finish and end the race amongst the top six should also be considered at the right odds.
