McGregor Calls Off Fight Against Poirier After Twitter Charity Squabble

Updated On Apr 13, 2021 by Landon Wheeler

Conor McGregor and Dustin PoirierWhen Conor McGregor decided to fight Dustin Poirier in Jan 2021, he agreed to pay a charitable donation of $500,000 to Poirier’s foundation. Poirier went on to win the fight by TKO and it appeared that McGregor took the loss on his chin and was keen to fight Poirier again since they were tied at 1-1.

Dustin Poirier decided to pass up a title shot and pursue a rematch with McGregor that was scheduled to take place on July 10. However, it appears that fight might not take place as McGregor took offense to some of Dustin Poirier’s tweets and called off the fight.

Conor McGregor promised fans that he would drop the nice act and go back to being the heel when he faced Poirier for the third time.

McGregor has been taking light jibes at Poirier on social media in recent weeks and Poirier responded this week with a tweet that accused McGregor of not keeping his promise and sending the $500,000 he promised to Poirier’s charity “The Good Fight Foundation“.

Poirier said that his team had reached out to McGregor’s team on multiple occasions about the charity donation but McGregor’s team had gone silent. He went on to say that he had accepted the fact that the donation would not come through.

Fans on social media went after McGregor for breaking his promise and skimping out on charity money. McGregor did not take kindly to the tweets from Dustin Poirier nor the backlash that followed.

McGregor Lashes Out And Cancels Fight

McGregor was quick to respond and reminded Dustin Poirier that the $500,000 was not a debt he owed but a donation he promised. He also implied that his team did not transfer the funds because they were waiting for Poirier and his team to send them plans of how the money was going to be spent.

He finished his tweet by claiming that there are a number of dodgy foundations in the world and they had more business sense than to transfer money to a foundation that would not submit plans of how it was going to be used.

Poirier took offense to the fact that his integrity and charity was questioned and by that time McGregor escalated to announce that he would no longer fight Poirier on July 10 but would find a new opponent. This was McGregor’s way of depriving Poirier of a money fight and the title fight.

Whether McGregor is hyping the third fight or if he is serious, we will have to wait and see!
