DraftKings To Support ICRG With Problem Gambling Research Grant

Updated On May 25, 2021 by Natalie Whitehead

DraftkingsDraftKings is one of the leading sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS) providers in the U.S. The betting operator announced this week that it has committed to financially support the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) going forward.

The sports betting market in America has experienced exponential growth, ever since the Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May 2018. There are now more than 20 states that have legalized sports betting and more than 10 states that are currently in the process of pushing forward with betting legislation.

With the sports betting market growing at a rapid pace, gambling opponents are concerned that the number of problem gamblers in the country is also rising. ICRG has a special fund that looks to finance scientific research on betting activities. This research fund is open to both American and International academic institutions.

This will allow researchers from top institutions in the U.S and around the globe to submit a grant application to receive funding to study the betting market and gambling addiction that stems from it. All grant applications will be peer reviewed and those shortlisted will then be further reviewed by the ICRG Scientific Advisory Board which is an independent board.

The final recipient will be shortlisted by the board and will receive a financial grant that will last for three years and end in 2024. Jason Robins, Chairman and CEO for DraftKings said the company was committed to its players and wanted them to have a safe betting experience at all times. Making a financial commitment to ICRG would help to boost player safety and responsible gambling procedures.

Key Topics That Needs To Be Researched

Dr. Russell Sanna, executive director for ICRG said that with sports betting growing at such a rapid pace in America, it was critical to invest in public health research and get more scientific data on problem gambling. Sanna thanked DraftKings for their financial commitment that will help the organization carry out cutting edge research.

ICRG is looking to fund researchers, who are interested in studying responsible sports betting practices in relation to other forms of betting, the different problem gambling stats and signs across a global demographic and the quality and effectiveness of current problem gambling programs and treatment facilities.
