Gameweek Six Champions League Recap

Updated On Dec 14, 2017 by David Nugent

Tuesday night saw a number of Champions League games take place, with British clubs experiencing mixed results on the night. Here is a lowdown on what happened in the final group games:

Group A

Manchester United claimed top spot in Group A by defeating CSKA Moscow 2-1 at Old Trafford, courtesy of second-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.

Jose Mourinho’s team enjoyed a good group campaign, recording five wins from their six group games. Swiss side FC Basel also qualified for the knockout stages of the competition after winning 2-0 at group whipping boys Benfica.

CSKA Moscow will drop down to the Europa League after finishing in third-place in the group.

Group B

Big spending French outfit PSG finished top of Group B, despite suffering a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich in their last group game. Bayern had already qualified for the knockout stages prior to the win, but PSG won the group courtesy of a superior head-to-head record.

Celtic suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Belgian side Anderlecht on Tuesday night. However, the Hoops hung on to claim third spot and a place in the Europa League, courtesy of a superior head-to-head record.

Group C

Roma pipped Chelsea to top spot in Group C, due to a superior head-to-head record after the pair finished on the same points tally.

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Spanish side Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge. Midfielder Saul gave Atletico the lead, only for a late own goal from defender Stefan Savic to level the scores.

Elsewhere, Roma recorded a 1-0 win over Qarabag at the Stadio Olimpico. The results meant that the Italian side rose to the top of the group and Antonio Conte’s side had to settle for second spot.

Perennial Champions League high performers Atletico Madrid finished third in the group. Diego Simeone’s team will drop down into the Europa League knockout stages.

Group D

Catalan giants Barcelona finished top of Group D ahead of Italian champions Juventus. Ernesto Valverde’s team recorded a 2-0 win over Sporting Lisbon courtesy of a goal from striker Paco Alcacer and an own goal from former Barcelona ace Jeremy Mathieu.

Juventus won 2-0 at Greek champions Olympiakos, but still finished three points behind Barcelona in the standings.

Sporting Lisbon claimed third spot, so will be taking part in the Europa League knockout stages in the new year.

Big issues to be settled on Wednesday night

There are still some issues to be resolved in Wednesday night’s Champions League games. Liverpool, Sevilla and Spartak Moscow could all still top Group E.

Elsewhere Manchester City have already won Group F. However, Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk are still fighting it out for the other place in the knockout stages of the competition. Meanwhile, in Group G, Besiktas have surprisingly topped the group, with FC Porto and RB Leipzig competing for second-place.

In Group H, Tottenham have already finished top, with Real Madrid second place three points behind. Even a defeat for Spurs and a Real Madrid win would not see the Spaniards win the group, as Tottenham have the edge in the head-to-head.

Which team have been the most impressive in the Champions League this season?
