Premier League gameweek 28 review part one

Updated On Feb 25, 2018 by David Nugent

The Premier League season is heading towards the final stretch. However, with lots still left to be decided in the English top-flight, a number of teams recorded vital wins on Saturday. Here is what happened in Saturday’s games:

Bournemouth 2-2 Newcastle

Newcastle threw away a two-goal lead to take home just a point from the south coast, which could prove costly in the top-flight final reckoning.

The Magpies took the lead on 17 minutes in this clash. Matt Ritchie fired across the face of goal that hit both Asmir Begovic and Steve Cook, only for Dwight Gayle to backheel the ball into the net. Gayle doubled his tally in first-half stoppage-time. Ayoze Perez’s cross from the back post went under Begovic and found Gayle, who had the simple task of tapping home.

The north east side looked to be heading home with maximum points. However, the Cherries were back in the game with just ten minutes remaining. Lewis Cook found full-back Adam Smith on the edge of the box and the defender controlled the ball before firing a powerful volley in off the bar. The home side equalised on 89 minutes. Defender Nathan Ake got forward well and the Dutchman’s cross fell to Dan Gosling, who scored from close-range.

The result was a blow for Newcastle. The Magpies are now 15th place in the table, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Bournemouth are currently 11th, but just five points clear of the drop zone.

Brighton 4-1 Swansea

Two other teams fighting for their Premier League lives met at the Amex Stadium, with the home side recording an emphatic victory.

The Seagulls took the lead on 18 minutes, as Mike van der Hoorn was adjudged to have brought down Glenn Murray in the penalty area and despite minimal contact, the home side were awarded a spot kick. The veteran striker stepped up and made no mistake with the penalty kick.

It took until the 69th minute for Brighton to double their lead. Colombian winger Jose Izquierdo crossed for Murray to fire home his tenth goal of the season. A good team move involving Pascal Gross and Murray resulted in winger Anthony Knockaert scoring the home sides third goal on 73 minutes.

Swansea got a goal back with five minutes remaining, as Tammy Abraham’s shot took a big deflection off Lewis Dunk and beat Mat Ryan in the home goal. The home side put a seal on the win in the last minute, as Jurgen Locadia scored on his league debut from close-range from a Dale Stephens cross.

The result meant that Swansea dropped back into the relegation zone on goal difference. The victory moved Brighton up to 12th place in the table, four points clear of the drop zone.

Liverpool 4-1 West Ham

Liverpool breezed past West Ham to keep the Irons in the relegation dogfight and enhance the Reds hopes of sealing a Champions League spot.

Liverpool took the lead on 29 minutes, as Emre Can headed home from Mohamed Salah’s corner kick. Jurgen Klopp doubled their lead early in the second half after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s good solo run resulted in the ball falling for Salah, who fired past Adrian. The Reds were three up on 57 minutes, as Roberto Firmino rounded the West Ham ‘keeper and fired into an empty net from a Can pass.

West Ham substitute Michail Antonio scored a consolation goal just before the hour mark. However, Sadio Mane completed the scoring with 13 minutes left, lifting the ball over Adrian from close-range.

The win moved Liverpool up to second-place in the Premier League table, four points clear of fifth-place. Jurgen Klopp’s side are now one of the favourites to seal a Champions League spot for next season. Meanwhile, West Ham remain in the fight for survival, just three points clear of the relegation zone.
