RussiaIf you followed the Russian doping sports scandal, this headline is going to make sense to you. If you haven’t followed the doping scandal, keep reading as this quick overview will make things clear to you.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has reviewed all of the details surrounding the state wide doping scandal that was sponsored by the Russian government.

In order to make Russian athletes compete better at global sporting events such as the Olympics and World Championships, the Russian government deliberately used performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) to boost their athletes’ performances and results.

Some of these Russian athletes were aware of what was going on and complied while some athletes had no idea what was happening. The state wide doping scandal caused an uproar in the sporting world as nations around the world felt cheated and wanted justice.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has penalized Russia from using its name, flag or anthem during the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the following 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. The same penalty also applies to all world sporting events including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) pushed for Russia to get a four year ban but the Court of Arbitration decided that a two year penalty was fair. The court also asked the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RADA) to pay a fine of $1.27 million to WADA.

Penalty Not Strong Enough

Russia and RADA will accept the penalty and move on because the penalty is definitely not as strong as some of Russia’s critics wanted it to be. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) was one of those critics that was shocked with the weak penalty.

USADA CEO Travis Tygart was highly critical of the water down penalty by the court and did not hold back. He alleged that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and WADA both mishandled and manipulated the entire Russian doping scandal from start to finish and played politics till the end.

He said the weak ruling was an insult to clean athletes and the ruling from WADA showed that tainted athletes can use PED’s and get away with a slap on the wrist. All Russian athletes will be allowed to compete in international events provided they do not test positive for any doping violations.
